The Wildwood Flower

Lyrics

Well those cotton fields were hot
And that tractor never was my kind of living
And when I hit sixteen
I had my size and I hit the road to freedom
And I’m glad I wasn’t there
To hear my momma cause you know she cried for hours
I still hear her saying to me
It’s your guitar and pick The Wildwood Flower

Now Memphis was big
And it was hard to find a job and so I didn’t
And It was easier to go back to the country
And that was more like living
Now I’ve been down every road
And I’ve stood on every porch where they were giving
And if they had a dime or an hour
I’d try to pick The Wildwood Flower

Now it’s hard to turn around
And look back down that long road I just traveled
Cause like a neverending ball of twine
My dreams have come unravelled
Now as evening lays its shawl
Across the shoulders of my life I’d find
I couldn’t tie my life together
With guitar strings and a poet’s heart filled life

And I’m glad I wasn’t there
To hear my momma cause I know she cried for hours
I still hear her saying to me
It’s your guitar and pick The Wildwood Flower

  12. That was so cool. I love the history behind the older musicians.

  13. I will admit that I never listened to Johnny Cash until I somehow heard his cover of “Hurt” by Nine Inch Nails (not one of my favorite bands — #204, according to Last.fm — but something I put on from time to time), which I thought was amazing. I believe it was one of the last things Johnny Cash ever released.

  14. Another great musical entry.

    Have a great week.

  15. its the first time i heard this song.

you can see my flowers here!

    thanks!

  16. Ahh, the good ol’ songs. I am not a country music fan, but that’s because I don’t like the contemporary stuff. The classics… *sigh*… That’s where it’s at.

  19. I’ve always liked Johnny Cash, even though much of his music was dark. This is one of his happier songs. Several people commented about Walk the Line….I loved that movie too.

  20. Now that is very creative take on the theme…good for you…I have never seen this…it was very entertaining…..the more I see old footage of Johnny Cash the more I enjoy his music….
