The Last Battle

The Last Battle

If it should be that I grow frail and weak

And pain should keep me from my sleep,

Then will you do what must be done,

For this — the last battle — can’t be won.

You will be sad I understand,

But don’t let grief then stay your hand,

For on this day, more than the rest,

Your love and friendship must stand the test.

We have had so many happy years,

You wouldn’t want me to suffer so.

When the time comes, please, let me go.

Take me to where to my needs they’ll tend,

Only, stay with me till the end

And hold me firm and speak to me

Until my eyes no longer see.

I know in time you will agree

It is a kindness you do to me.

Although my tail its last has waved,

From pain and suffering I have been saved.

Don’t grieve that it must be you

Who has to decide this thing to do;

We’ve been so close — we two — these years,

Don’t let your heart hold any tears.

  1. This poem has come to mean so much to me. It helped me get through one of the hardest times of my life. I had to put my best friend to rest in April. He was the light of my life, but when the time came, the look in his eyes told me it was time and that I was doing the right thing. It did not, however, make it any easier. My heart was breaking, but when I read this poem, it gave me some peace. I have his picture, ashes and a copy of this poem next to my bed. Thank you to whoever wrote this

  2. I have had Dogs and Cats all my life, but there’s always one that’s different, – my wonderful Cat, China, 5 years she’s been dead now, and not a single day goes past without me thinking of her, this poem helped the day she left me, but she was only 4 so many years still left, Cancer it was, I still can;t look too long at pictures of her, and just typing this the tears are flowing again.
I swore the day she died I would have no more pets, that was it —- now I have two Poodles, my wife got the first one Tuppence, she helped so much. But I’d give anything to just hold little China once more

Aaawww-bless you. I too said I wouldn’t get another pet, but we did get another puppy. He is a Jack Russell. I am with you-I would give anything to hold Patch again. Thanks so much for stopping by.
